Norton Shores Plumb's store to close next week

Grocery chain closing one of five stores

MUSKEGON COUNTY - A grocery wholesaler based in the Upper Peninsula is expanding and may begin stocking products at three Plumb's stores in Muskegon County, possibly sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Tom Kuber, owner of Great Lakes Foods, said Friday, Nov. 4, his company would have had have trucks at the Whitehall, North Muskegon and Muskegon Township Plumb's locations Saturday morning, but a legal issue is delaying deliveries.  That will need to be resolved before Great Lakes Foods can start providing Plumb's with grocery items.

Stock at those stores have been dwindling for weeks. Customers have reported to WZZM 13 News times when shelves with items like cereal were empty.

Kuber says when it does begin the process of fully restocking those three stores will take weeks. He says the problem Plumb's encountered with a previous supplier leading to the problem is "complex."

Great Lakes Foods will not be stocking two other Plumb's stores, one in the city of Newaygo, and one on Sherman Boulevard in Norton Shores.

The location in Norton Shores will be closed on Nov. 13, at 8 p.m.

WZZM 13 has reached out to Plumb's numerous times for comment.

Previously, Plumb's management told us it is business as usual at the stores.

Friday Plumb's president Jim Nader confirmed the store on Sherman Boulevard will close.  Employees will be offered positions at other stores.  Nader also says company leadership will move out of offices in Norton Shores. Some company officials will work from offices at the Apple Avenue store, and others the Whitehall store.

SpartanNash is the wholesale distributor for the Plumb's location in Newaygo.  The changes Plumb's is making in Muskegon County are not directly impacting the operation of that location.

Great Lakes Foods is based in Menominee, Michigan. The company supplies grocery items to around 80-grocery stores in Michigan's upper peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.
