Switch to expand data center in Gaines Township

Switch announces plans for expansion

GAINES TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Switch has announced plans to expand the company's operation in Gaines Township. Switch bought the old Steelcase Pyramid building in 2016 and renovated the facility for a new data center.

The company tells WZZM 13 it will break ground in 2018 on a 940,000 square foot expansion at the 60th Street Campus.

Right now the data center, which stores digital information for large companies, uses about half of its available open data space.

When the company first announced plans to come to West Michigan, it anticipated investing roughly $5-billion and creating 1,000 jobs in the first 10 years of its operations.

The company could not say how many new jobs might be created with the latest expansion.
