13OYS: Are there any grocery delivery services for people on assistance?

On your side: Disabled shopping

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The online shopping trend continues and that includes buying groceries. One WZZM 13 viewer asked: Why aren’t there more options available for people on assistance?

Online shopping giants like Amazon Prime recently announced it would offer discounts to people with EBT cards, but the service is only available in larger cities.

There are services like Shipt. People in West Michigan have that, but it doesn't accept EBT cards. Meijer accepts EBT in-store, but Shipt says it's current payment system cannot accept them.

WZZM 13 decided to look here in West Michigan. The options are limited, but there are some. Lora Brown of Jenison owns a person shopping service called GroceriesRus. She’s been doing it since 2010.

"I have a lot of seniors, a lot of disabled people who can't get out and do shopping." Lora, much like any other food delivery service, charges a fee. "It's 25 percent of your grocery receipt with a minimum of $25," she said. "We also use MPerks or Yes cards at Family Fare or D&W. So, we get big discounts. Sometimes it pays for our fee."

GroceriesRus does use EBT cards. There are also several community programs available to seniors and the disabled.

We found these: In Kent County, if a person is not completely homebound but has transportation issues due to age and/or disability there is a Walmart Shuttle that runs here in Grand Rapids.

There are also several agencies such as Senior Neighbors that help provide senior transportation or connect them with other services.

On the lakeshore in Muskegon and Ottawa Counties, Meals on Wheels does deliver prepared meals.

If you can get out, there are transportation options through Senior Resources or the Disability Network.

If you truly need a grocery delivery service or transportation to the store, the best option, is to call 211. Specialists are available in each county to work with people on their needs, based on disability and age.
