How to get the deals on Amazon Prime Day

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Who needs Black Friday? Online retail giant Amazon is just a few hours away from launching its annual "Prime Day" specials.

It's a 30-hour period when Amazon will offer thousands of special deals to people with memberships in its "Prime" subscription service. They're like "door-busters" offered by retailers on that first Friday after Thanksgiving.

Experts say some of the best deals available are for electronics, ranging from TV's to smartphones and computer accessories. There will also be specials on luggage, fitness gear and toys.

Amazon claims that its 3rd annual Prime Day is going to be bigger and better than before.

“If you’re looking for some of the best deals, you want to look at electronics. Amazon is really stocking up on televisions" says Hitha Hergoz from H2 research.

To take advantage of Prime Day sales, you must be a member of Amazon Prime. This service is $99-a-year club and offers free two-day shipping, as well as free premium video and music streaming, free online photo storage, a Kindle lending library and various other offers throughout the year.

Here are a couple of tips, if you're thinking about joining: new Prime members get a free 30-day trial, which means you can sign up, get the Prime deals, and then cancel the membership before the $99 fee kicks in.

If you have a college student in the home, they can get a 6-month free trial membership and then it's 50 percent off that annual fee.

Also, not all deals are good ones. Make sure you check other stores. Retailers like Walmart and Target are expected to offer similar deals on some of the same products with free shipping.

There is a great website camelcamelcamel.com -- it doesn't track Prime Day sales, but it does follow the price history of products on Amazon. That will give you an idea on whether the "prime deal" price is really a deal or not.
