1 killed, 5 hurt in head-on crash in Sparta

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

SPARTA, MICH. - The Kent County Sheriff's Department is investigating a deadly, two-vehicle crash in Sparta.

Deputies say the crash happened at 11:43 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Sparta Ave NW and Ball Creek Rd NW. Witnesses on scene told police the southbound car crossed over the center line and struck a northbound SUV head on.

The passenger of the car died on scene. The driver of the car was transported to the hospital with numerous injuries. All four passengers in the SUV also sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. 

Deputies were assisted on scene by Sparta Fire, Kent City Fire, and Rockford Ambulance.
