Alcohol, drugs appear to play role in Deerfield Township crash

DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Three people are hospitalized after a driver slammed his car into a tree while trying to avoid debris in the road.

Mecosta County deputies responded to the single-car accident on Washington Road near 137th Avenue in Deerfiled Township around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Deputies believe the car was traveling westbound when the driver tried to avoid a tree limb in the road. They say he tried to over-correct and lost control, hitting a tree.

The 20-year-old Big Rapids man and one passenger were taken to Spectrum Health in Big Rapids for non-life threatening injuries. A third passenger was taken to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids for his injuries.

Deputies believe alcohol, drugs and speed all played factors in this crash.
