Alcohol-related crash in Cascade Township brings prison for intoxicated driver

Driver sentenced for May DUI crash

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (WZZM) - A Wyoming man has been sentenced to prison for causing a May crash in Cascade Township while under the influence of alcohol.

Colin Ray Kerkstra, 21, was sentenced in Kent County Circuit Court this week to between two and five years in prison for drunken driving causing serious injury.

Four people were injured in the May 14 accident, including Kerkstra and his passenger.

Investigators say Kerkstra was traveling east on Cascade Road SE at a high rate of speed when his Pontiac Grand Prix struck an SUV carrying a Lowell couple.

The 70-year-old driver turned off of 28th Street onto Cascade when his Chevrolet Equinox was struck. He and his 71-year-old passenger received minor injuries.

A passenger in Kerkstra’s car was seriously hurt, but has recovered. Kerkstra entered a no contest plea to the felony charge in July.
