SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WZZM)-- Despite the wind chill temperatures and blizzard conditions this winter, Jim Groesbeck stills enjoys running outside, but he's constantly dodging packed snow and ice.

Yaktrax are a heavy duty traction device you put on your boots or shoes that are supposed to instantly give you traction, confidence and safety during the worst winter conditions.

Yaktrax are made with steel coils and heavy duty rubber that velcro around your footwear. There are models for both walking and running. Jim used them on a snow-packed and ice-covered trail that also crossed dry pavement streets. Jim said, "I like them a lot, definitely a confidence builder. My main concern when I'm running is coming up to intersections where there's a lot of ice, and I can't believe the grip I'm getting with these."

He said they felt fine on dry pavement as well, with no slipping. He also said the springs actually seemed to give him a little more cushion and bounce.

Jim used them for over 32 miles of running and said they're awesome. He says he doesn't know how he survived a winter without them.

I did get emails and comments from people who've used them for long periods of time, and they say they do wear out eventually, especially if you're hitting a lot of dry pavement. Some said they would go through 2 or 3 pairs of Yaktrax a season, but they still recommended them.

Yaktrax can be found at most sporting goods stores. We paid around $22.00 at Dunham's, but I also found them online for as low as $14.99. Just be sure to call ahead because many stores were sold out.
