It's not only Valentine's weekend, but Sunday the 13th is Friends For Life Day. What better day to call, email, FaceBook or Tweet your friend for life and remind her to do a monthly breast self exam.
"Komen for the Cure, West Michigan" emphasizes how important it is to know your normal; meaning what feels or looks normal to one woman isn't the same for another. Breast self exams, mammograms and clinical exams all help. Early detection is the key to beating breast cancer.
Several "fun" fundraisers are being held in the Grand Rapids area on Friday and Saturday night.
Friday night a "Pink Out" will be held during the men's and women's varsity basketball games between West Ottawa and Jenison at West Ottawa High School. The boys' game starts at 6 p.m., the girls' at 7:30. The food and fun starts at 5 p.m. in the cafeteria. "Pink Out" t-shirts will also be sold and everyone is encouraged to wear pink to the game.
Friday night Union High School will play against Kenowa Hills basketball team in a "Play For Hope" basketball game to raise cancer awareness. Attendees are encouraged to purchase purple "Playing For Hope" t-shirts for $10 and proceeds will go towards Gilda's Club and Van Andel Institute. The festivities start at 6 p.m.
Saturday night, a dinner and dance will be held at the Knights of Columbus Council in Grand Rapids. Money raised will be donated to the West Michigan Affiliate of Komen for the Cure. For more information call (616) 534-6984.
