GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Kent County Sheriff's Department is honoring a neighbor and a jewelry store owner who helped deputies stop a group of thieves.

Paul Medawar and Lois Rottschafer received awards Friday night for their responses to last year's robbery at Medawar's store on Plainfield Ave. NE.

Kent County deputies say Medawar called 911 following the hold-up, and Rottschafer helped police locate the third and final suspect hiding in her neighborhood.

Two deputies who rescued eight people from a burning apartment were also honored at Friday night's award ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

A retired deputy who was shot on the job -- and Sheriff Larry Stelma, who helped him survive -- also received combat stars.
