UPDATE (8:00 p.m.)-- Grand Valley State University spokesman Tim Nott is confirming that the runner who collapsed and died is former GVSU football star Jason Kinzler.
An official with Mercantile Bank says a memorial fund in his name will be set up at the bank.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-Grand Rapids police are confirming that a runner died during Saturday's Fifth Third River Bank Run.
Officers say the man was running the 25K when he collapsed around 11 a.m. near the intersection of Lake Michigan Drive and Seward Avenue. Police and paramedics tried to resuscitate the runner at the scene. But officers say he was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he later died.
Race director Kristin Aidif says the last time a 25K runner died was several years ago. That victim passed away after finishing the race.
Aidif says medical crews had a busy day given the weather. She says they treated quite a few cases of dehydration, but no exact numbers are available.
