A 5-year-old girl was killed in Solon Township after she was run over by a lawn mower.
SOLON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - A parent operating a riding lawn mower was unable to see a daughter playing in the grass and police say the five-year-old was run over and killed by the machine.
"A very tragic accident," says Lt. Jeff McAlary of the Kent County Sheriff's Department.
It happened around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday on Marsh Creek Road near Sand Lake in Solon Township.
From the seat of the riding lawn mower the parent cutting the grass did not see the five-year-old in the lawn, according to investigators.
"It appears she was playing," says Lt. McAlary. "They were riding a mid-sized riding lawn mower. They did not see the child and either rolled forward or backward."
An ambulance and helicopter were dispatched to bring the girl to the hospital, but her injuries were so massive she died almost immediately.
"Because of the condition of the girl, there is no way it would be beneficial to transport her," says Lt. McAlary.
Relatives and friends gathered at the house on Marsh Creek Road to try to console the parents over the death of the girl.
On Tuesday night, her mother was taken by ambulance to the hospital to get help and treatment for her grief.
"They are so distraught, so beside themselves it's very difficult to even communicate with them," says Lt. McAlary.
