ADA, Mich. (WZZM) - Triathlon's are no stranger to residents of Grand Rapids, the Reed's Lake and Millennium Park Sprint Distance Triathlons draw athletes from around the area, but Sunday there was an even more challenging event, the Grand Rapids Triathlon.
This triathlon includes distances for Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman.
The USAT sanctioned event is one of only five in the Midwest and this was the first time it was held in Grand Rapids. Andy Vidro is the co-director of the Grand Rapids Triathlon, "We kinda dreamed this thing up back in August and we're amazed that it came together and we put together a core team with our coordinators as well." Nearly 900 athletes participated in this year's event which was held at Leonard Park in Ada.
Proceeds benefitted the Miles For Smiles campaign that allows disabled children to participate in these sporting events.
Plans are already in place to hold the event again next year.
