Local farmers are producing a new apple, called the "SweeTango."

KENT CITY, Mich. (WZZM) -- Move over Honeycrisps -- a new apple could soon become the most popular apple in the Midwest.

There is a new variety called the "SweeTango" and it should be in Michigan stores in September.

Ken Hubert grows them at Summit Farms in Kent City. "It's been a very good year so far," says Hubert. "Good pollination, no frost this spring, we've had a lot of rain, so size is good."

Hubert is especially excited about the SweeTango.

"It's a firm apple, juicy, early. I just think people are really going to like it," he says.

The sweet, slightly tart, apple was created at the University of Minnesota. It's is cross between the popular Honeycrisp and an apple called Zestar. When combined, they make a SweetTango.

Hubert's crop will be ready in a few weeks. "Well, they'll be packed right here and go right into stores here," says Hubert.
