HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - An Allegan County man has died, following a plane crash at Tulip City Airport.

Dispatchers received the first call about the crash around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The initial report was that a plane was "upside down" on the east end of the airport.

The pilot and lone occupant of the plane died at the scene. He is identified as Gerald Brinkerhuff, 65, of Gobles.

Investigators say Brinkerhuff was flying an experimental, single-engine plane that he built himself. Sgt. Drew Torres of the Holland Department of Public Safety says Brinkerhuff was performing a landing maneuver at the time of the crash.

"He was practicing what are called touch and go landings and came in and fell short or crashed just short of the runway from the east to the west of the runway."

An investigation into the plane crash is on-going.
