WAYLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- An Allegan County middle school student is in the hospital after she stopped breathing during a physical education class.
According to a news release from Wayland Union Schools, the 14-year-old girl collapsed at Wayland Middle School around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
School staff members immediately began performing CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) on her until police and paramedics arrived.
The girl is undergoing tests at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids and is listed in stable condition.
Portable defibrillators are not in every school, but the Wes Leonard Heart Team is lobbying lawmakers to pass a measure to require schools to have them.
Wes Leonard, 16, died last March after collapsing at the end of his Fennville basketball team's final regular season game.
His death was blamed on complications from an enlarged heart.
His family started their foundation to prevent other teenagers from dying.
