(GRBJ) - The recent documentation of thousands of trees on Calvin College's grounds may eventually lead to it joining a handful of higher learning institutions that are taking concerted steps to reduce and ultimately neutralize the greenhouse gas emissions on their campuses.
Calvin President Gaylen Byker commissioned an ad hoc committee to study and recommend, before he retires in May next year, if the college should sign a pledge to implement over time a sustainability plan called the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment. If it signs the pledge, within two years of an implementation start date, Calvin would agree to develop a climate action plan for achieving climate neutrality, which is defined as having no net greenhouse gas emissions. This goal is achieved through conservation, renewable energy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions or other measures to mitigate the remaining emissions.
