(WZZM) - Every year, dozens of West Michigan schools participate in the annual Toys for Tots campaign. They join the WZZM 13 School Spirit Challenge and collect toys for children who otherwise might go without on Christmas morning.

The schools challenge students to provide new, unwrapped toys for children ages 1 to 15. The Challenge is promoted on the WZZM Morning News and then each school is invited to appear on the Morning News on December 9, to donate the toys they have collected.

All toys go to the counties in which they are collected. The kids get some positive recognition for their generosity, but more importantly, children in West Michigan receive toys.

"In many communities, the School Spirit Challenge has become a critical source of toys," said WZZM 13 Community Relations Director Catherine Behrendt. "No one understands as well as a child how sad it would be to wake up without a toy on Christmas morning."

If your school is doing a Toys for Tots collection or would like to start one, call Catherine Behrendt at 616-559-1481.
