Football players give to others as gift to coach

Allendale rocket football players donating to Toys for Tots.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Members of a local rocket football team are showing they have hearts of gold.

Several members of Allendale's seventh grade team stopped by the WZZM 13 studios Thursday night to donate nearly three dozen footballs to Toys for Tots.

The team's coach says his players came up with the idea. Each of the 34 members presented a ball to him during their end of season banquet.

"At the end of the year, parents and the kids will get something for the coaches, says Coach Joe Hovingh, "but what the kids thought would be more meaningful would be to get something to give to some people who don't have as much."
