GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-The day many West Michigan families had been waiting for, has arrived.
Saturday, hundreds of volunteers fanned out at three facilities to help distribute Toys for Tots. Struggling families that signed up for help this year stopped by to pick out gifts for their children.
"Hopefully they get something that their kids are looking for. But either way, they come out with a smile on their face, so that's good," said Capt. Robert Lehner of the United States Marine Corps.
Among the volunteers Saturday was a group of WZZM 13 employees, including sports director Tom Clyde, health reporter Val Lego, anchors Lee Van Ameyde and Derek Francis, and meteorologists Alana Nehring and Joe Kopecek.
"It's an outstanding example of a community coming together to provide for some needy families. The bottom line is making sure the kids have a good Christmas," said Capt. Lehner.
The Marine Corps started the Toys for Tots program in 1947.
