WZZM 13 Celebrates 50 Years!
Grand Rapids, MI - WZZM 13 was born on the main floor of the old Pantlind Hotel. On November 1, 1962 at 6:30 pm the new television station sparked to life and twenty minutes later went black again! The staff of approximately 65 people scrambled to replace a transmitter tube that failed during debut and left the channel dark for almost ten minutes.
"Dealing with LIVE television is still as exciting today as it was nearly 50 years ago, and we are thrilled to announce a yearlong celebration of our history," said Janet Mason, WZZM 13, President and General Manager.
The party began today Friday, January 13th with a giant cake and retro tee-shirts with the old WZZM 13 logo and symbolic black cat on them. "We gave some tee-shirts away on the air today and received hundreds of inquires from viewers hoping to win one," said Pamela Rankin, WZZM 13 Marketing and Promotions Manager.
Other community involvement events are in the works throughout the year, both on and off camera. Watch for the return of former on-camera talent, memorabilia showcases, a new episode of BOZO the Clown, Morning News Historical Trivia, Social Media Conversations and a Community Gathering complete with a replica of the old WZZM 13 Hot Air Balloon.
The WZZM 13 News department will be doing a series of look-back stories about the ever changing way in which we gather information. From the early days of pencil, paper and splicing film, to the new modern era of computers, data disc's and High Definition Broadcasting complete with all the background research, exciting technical engineering feats, sweat and tears that make this business as magical today as year's gone by.
Even selling our product has changed dramatically over the years from the smoked filled three martini lunches of the "Mad Men" era to the neatly bundled package of multi-platform exposure on-air, on-line, and on-the-go with mobile smart phones.
Stay tuned to WZZM13 over the next year as we look back at where we came from and where we hope to go in the future in the NEXT 50 years. WZZM 13 is a dedicated mainstay of West Michigan complete with our landmark 13 Weatherball and launch of our new "Celebrating 50 Years" logo.
