BACKSPLASH TILE: Candace Olsen has overdone the 1" square glass tile to death. Instead, check out similar glass but in a more creative and natural shape: coins, rounds, and medallions.
FLOORING: standard 12" ceramic tile and even wood are being upstaged by natural, soft, resilient cork and porcelain tile that impersonates bamboo.
RULE OF 3: instead of using one cabinetry color and one countertop color, kitchens are taking on more personality by using a rule of 3--a main cabinetry color or stain, plus a contrasting stain or color for an island or featured set of cabinets, plus a main countertop color.
LIGHTING: harsh, practical pendants and bulbs are making way for cool vintage bulbs and fixtures over sinks and islands.
COUNTERTOPS: giant patterns of granite are falling out of style in favor of more practical quartz countertops. The bright bits of stone mixed with resin allow for an attractive, non-porous surface for an active family.
