ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- For the past couple of years, Zeeland auto-supplier Gentex, has thrived, even in a troubled economy.
Governor Snyder visited the company Friday with rave reviews, as Gentex prepares for a major expansion and new jobs.
After a quick glance at the latest high-tech mirrors, Gov. Snyder's big grin said it all. "The only criticism I have is that you're too humble. We need people in this community to speak up more," said Gov. Snyder.
Gentex has plenty to be loud about; specifically a four step expansion project for increased production.
"The products that are made here are bought by just about every company in their industry. You define the mirror industry for autos," says Snyder.
In the past two years, the auto-supplier has hired more than 350 engineering and technical positions, half from Michigan universities and colleges.
"We'll be hiring nearly 100 college grads for 2012" says Bruce Los, VP of "Gentex".
"Gentex" is one of the companies leading Ottawa County - which has the fastest job growth in the country.
"I think you can teach a seminar about its success. I was hoping Fred would come to Lansing to teach government a few things," says Snyder.
But the high level of education needed to work at places like "Gentex" isn't always affordable. "We've identified that as an issue, and we're working dilligently on any solutions to make sure kids finish the school year," says Snyder.
Still, "Gentex" is doing its part. The company estimates that after the expansion is complete it will carry more than 30 million mirrors in Holland and Zeeland every year.
Governor Snyder is also encouraging companies to offer internships - so that students will know there's a better chance they'll get a job when they graduate.
