Ham radio operators demonstrate their hobby

Amateur radio operators will meet in Muskegon to show off their hobby -- and usefulness in emergencies.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) - A group of amateur radio operators will meet in Muskegon this weekend to show off their hobby, and to demonstrate how vital they are during emergencies.

Jeff Stapel can reach out around the world, using his radio.  He is also known as W8SWX Norton Shores.

The technology has been in use for more than a century, but it is still vital during disasters when land line and cell phone systems fail.

Within one hour of a disaster, the network can be in action, helping to provide communications for police, fire, hospitals and other rescuers.

The Amateur Radio Demonstration will start at Noon on Saturday, January 28 at the Muskegon Conservation Club on Lake Avenue.
