Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - The Tennessee Volunteers tallied its 1,500th
win in school history by taking down the Auburn Tigers 64-49 in SEC action at
Thompson-Boling Arena.
Jeronne Maymon recorded a double-double of 15 points and 19 rebounds for
Tennessee (10-11, 2-4 SEC). Trae Golden scored 13 points, Skylar McBee notched
12 points, and Jordan McRae and Jarnell Stokes each netted 11 for the Vols,
who have won two of three.
For Auburn (12-9, 2-5), Kenny Gabriel led the way with 13 points while Varez
Ward scored 12 points and Rob Chubb chipped in with 10 points. The Tigers are
now losers of three out of four.
Auburn held a 13-12 lead with 9:46 remaining in the first half, but Tennessee
finished the frame on an 18-3 run to take a convincing 30-16 lead into the
locker room. The Vols shot just 34.4 percent from the floor in the half but
held the Tigers to 24 percent.
The Vols continued to struggle from the field in the second half, connecting
on just 34.6 percent after the break, but kept a comfortable lead throughout
by playing lock down defense, holding the Tigers to 35.5 percent shooting in
the half.
Tennessee dominated on the glass, outrebounding Auburn 53-30. The Vols also
blocked eight shots.
