Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Tu Holloway scored a game-high 21 points as
the Xavier Musketeers took down the George Washington Colonials, 59-58, in
Atlantic 10 Conference play at the Smith Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Musketeers (15-7, 6-3 A10) was Kenny
Frease with 10 points as the team won for the second straight outing.
The Colonials (8-14, 3-5) were paced by Tony Taylor who dropped in 20 points,
followed by Nemanja Mikic who tallied 19 points and Lasan Kromah with 11
points to go along with his game-high 13 rebounds in the team's third
consecutive setback.
Both teams shot the ball just over 44 percent from the floor in the first
half, but thanks to a 6-of-13 effort behind the three-point line GW was able
to put up a 34-31 lead at the break.
With a pair of free throws by Taylor at the 3:22 mark of the second half, the
Colonials moved out to a four-point lead at 58-54, but from there the offense
fell silent for the hosts and eventually Holloway put the visitors ahead with
a jumper with 30 seconds remaining.
The Colonials had one last possession on the night and had three cracks at a
game-winning basket, but a driving layup failed and a couple of attempts at
put-backs also missed the mark as the hosts were held without a field goal for
more than four minutes to close out the meeting.
During the contest Holloway moved into sixth place on Xavier's all-time assist
list, the guard now with 498 dishes, while Mark Lyons became the latest
Musketeer to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
