FRUITPORT, Mich. (WZZM)- A Fruitport man faces the possibility of life in prison for allegedly punching a baby multiple times.

Prosecutors say 23-year old Donald Thomas Bayne hit his girlfriend's 9-month old baby girl in the back of her head because the baby would not stop crying.

He was charged today with first degree child abuse and a life felony for torturing the child.  The baby has a fractured skull and is in stable, but very serious condition at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

It happened last week at a home on Peach Street in Fruitport while his girlfriend was a work.  The Fruitport Fire Department arrived following Bayne's call to 911 to report the baby had stopped breathing.
