The Humane Society of West Michigan is raising money for a new animal treadmill.

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Humane Society of West Michigan is raising money to buy a new treadmill for its animals to use for exercise.

The Humane Society had a treadmill before, but it broke down. Now the organization is looking for money to get a replacement.

Exercise if vital for animals during bad weather, and using a treadmill to substitute for long walks or runs has proven to be very successful.

"When it's too hot to be outside or too cold to be outside they can maybe go for potty break, but they still have the physical need to exercise and in cases like that it's actually great for them to run the treadmill," says Namiko Ota-Noveskey, an animal behavioral specialist for the humane society.

The organization hopes to raise $400-$800 for the new treadmill. Workers at the humane society hope to have the money raised within the next month.
