GRANT TWP., Mich. (WZZM)- A cigar lighter may be to blame for a fire that killed an Oceana County man. The man was able to call 911 to report the fire. Before making the call he yelled to his wife to get out of the house. She was able to escape unharmed.
The victim was upstairs filling a cigar lighter when the fire started shortly before noon Thursday.
Detective Shane Hasty with the Oceana County Sheriff's Department says, "She does not know how or what he was using, but that he went up stairs to fill a lighter that had run out of fluid and then he yelled down to her that the house was on fire."
The man and his wife are both in their 80's. The Ludington Daly News reports he was identified as Daniel S. Grubb Sr.
It took four lakeshore fire departments two hours to put the fire out because the home was at the top of a steep and long driveway near park and 64th Street.
