GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The city will again open three of its six large swimming pools this summer.
The pools at Briggs, Richmond and Martin Luther King Jr. Parks will open in early July and remain open for about seven weeks. Prices are still be be finalized, but are expected to be the same as last year, when residents were charged $2, and $5 for non-residents.
For years, pool funding has been precarious, supported in stop-gap manner by philanthropists and community donors. In the budget proposal released Tuesday, general fund dollars will fund the three pools.
Public Services Director James Hurt told WZZM 13, "We're gonna talk about a sustainable model for pools going forward and some decisions are going to have to be made on how do we support those pools. We've got six pools - we only opened three the last two years - this summer will be three again, so we have three pools that are not going to be open."
