IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) - The Ionia County Health Department has a summer warning for residents - watch out for Giant Hogweed!

Giant Hogweed is an invasive, noxious weed that should be easy to spot.  A full-grown plant is 8 to 14 feet tall, has a stem of two to four inches in diameter, and leaves that can be up to five feet across.

The weed is a threat because it has the potential to cause severe skin irritations.  Sap from the weed can cause painful blisters within 24 to 48 hours.  If sap gets in the eyes, it can cause blindness.  Juice from the weed can produce painless red blotches that later turn into scars that can last for several years.

 If you suspect that Giant Hogweed may be on your property, do not try to remove it yourself.  The Dept. of Agriculture is asking that you contact your local MSU Extension Office.  You can also send a picture of Giant Hogweed to MDA-info@michigan.gov.  For a more detailed brochure, click here.
