Michigan's new fireworks law allows people to buy more powerful fireworks thoughout the year, but the use is still restricted to private property.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The improper use of fireworks is becoming a concern, especially since more powerful explosives are legal this year.

"A lot of people don't read the label, that's why I tell them read your warning label," Tom Cutzli, who sells consumer grade fireworks, which are now legal in Michigan.

Cutzli says powerful explosives like roman candles are often misused.

"Probably 99 percent of customers want to hold them in their hand. Instead, you're supposed to dig a hole six inches, place the candle into that, light it, and back off to a safe distance," says Cutzli.

Only people 18 or older can buy fireworks, but anyone can use them.

"Adults should realize these aren't made for children," says Grand Rapids Fire Chief Peg Felix.

Felix says no matter what, only light the fireworks once.

"If a firework does not go off, never try to reignite it. Give it 15 minutes and douse it with a bucket of water," says Felix.

Cutzli wants customers to enjoy an explosion or two and be safe at the same time.

"I want them to be return customers, but absolutely I want them to be safe,"says Cutzli.

At least eight West Michigan communities have some type of ban on commercial fireworks, including Grandville, Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Hudsonville, Kentwood, Walker, Rockford and Muskegon Heights.
