WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- A panicked call at WZZM 13's  back door led to a quick discovery Wednesday night.

As staff members stepped outside to the rear parking lot, a crackling sound filled the air.

Smoke, visible from a mile away, caught motorcyclist Brent Fields attention as he drove south on US-131.

"From about the Whitecaps Stadium,  I could see some smoke, and it caught my interest to what was going on," said Fields. "I thought maybe somebody had something going on, but I pulled up to the parking lot next to you guys and said, is somebody back there?"

Fields got not response. "I hurdled through the weeds and a 30 by 30  area was on fire."

WZZM 13's evening crew was fairly shocked to see the widespread nature of a grass fire, which was likely triggered by firework sparks shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

WZZM 13 employees Kurt Race and Ryan Kornstadt scrambled, grabbing two fire extinguishers and targeting the flames as the Walker Fire Department was called.

The fire spread rapidly in the extremely dry conditions, nearing two of WZZM 13's satellite dishes, pine trees, and a nearby office building.

The Walker Fire Department arrived with hoses and water, containing, and extinguishing the remaining portions of brush that were still burning.

Both satellite dishes were saved.
