GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It was hot and sticky Thursday. How hot? So hot that Consumers Energy recorded a record for electrical demand on a June day.
On Thursday, customer demand hit a peak of 8,607 megawatts at 5 p.m. That falls a bit short of the all time peak demand record for the electric utility of 8,930 megawatts set on July 21, 2011.
Consumers CEO John Russell says the company is well prepared to meet high demand.
"Our motto is 'Count on Us' and we work hard every day to meet that commitment to our customers," says Russell. "Every year, we make substantial investments in our power plants and electric distribution systems to serve customers and improve the environment. Thursday, when it counted most, we were ready to meet the challenge of a record monthly demand and serve our customers with the reliable power that they needed to keep their homes and businesses cool and comfortable," Russell said.
