SAUGATUCK, Mich. (WZZM)-A man is recovering after being attacked because he had no cigarettes.

It happened outside Marro's Italian Restaurant in Saugatuck, just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Douglas police say the suspect kept asking the victim for cigarettes. When the victim said he didn't have any, the suspect got agitated and attacked him with a knife.

The victim suffered a substantial wound to his neck and needed surgery. He was listed in stable condition at Holland Hospital Saturday night.

The suspect, a 54-year-old man from Glenn, is in jail. He will be charged with assault with intent to commit murder.

Officers say both men had been drinking.
