MONTCALM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Police in Montcalm County say a man was high on synthetic marijuana when he held his family hostage. It happened early Sunday morning at a house in the 1100 block of West Sidney Road.

Deputies say the man held his mother and other family members at knifepoint for two and a half hours, threatening to kill them. He also disconnected phone lines to the home.

The family escaped when the mother convinced her son to let her go buy more alcohol for him.

When authorities arrived, they found the man passed out. As they arrested him, the suspect attacked deputies and said he was "very upset" he could no longer purchase K-2 or "Spice."

On Sunday, a statewide ban on synthetic marijuana went into effect.
