KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police and fire chiefs from several Kent County communties are urging people to be very careful this week with fireworks.
They gathered Monday afternoon at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Kentwood, which was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Investigators are looking into the possibility fireworks might be the cause, though they cannot say it was.
Even if fireworks did not play a role in the church fire, authorities say they are worried they will see more fires over the next several days.
Under Michigan's new fireworks law, people are allowed to launch explosives previously considered illegal.
Authorities are hoping Gov. Snyder will step in and ban the use of fireworks under current conditions.
