GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) When the Grand Rapids Cyclones begin their inaugural season in the American Basketball Association next season, they won't have a designated home arena. In fact, they're not expected to play home games at all. "A traveling team is one that plays primarily away games," league CEO Joe Newman told WZZM on Tuesday. "They bring their fan base to away games. So Grand Rapids as a traveling team, not as a full team, will be going to Oakland County, Pontiac, Detroit and then probably back over to Chicago. And they just travel. They are not playoff eligible but all of their games count in the standings."
Newman says his league is the largest sports league in North America with 90 franchises and growing. He says the league has 75 percent minority and female ownership also setting it apart from other sports leagues. "The ABA you could say, its model is no different that a Wal-Mart or a Target. They locate in large markets and they locate in smaller markets and mid-sized markets."
