GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Tuesday is day seven of this heat wave, and the city of Grand Rapids is activating its emergency preparedness plan.
The city is coordinating with the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Salvation Army, and Consumers Energy to keep residents safe.
Mayor George Heartwell says it's important for people in the city to keep an eye out for one another during the heat wave.
"We're a community of neighbors, and that means you need to watch out for your neighbors," says the mayor. "If you know someone in your neighborhood who is vulnerable because of their age or isolation because they have young children at home, get this information to them."

Mel Trotter Ministries is also opening a cooling shelter for men, women and children. It's open daily from 8:30 a.m. until five p.m. at it's location on Commerce Ave. SW in downtown Grand Rapids.
