Jonathan Stevens Mattress Company
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - "Handrafted in West Michigan" is the logo adopted by Jonathan Stevens Mattress Company. President Ron Zagel says it struck a chord with customers who want to keep their money in the region - while getting a good night's sleep.
"When they buy from Jonathan Stevens, they're supporting a lot of local people," Zagel told WZZM 13's Peter Ross.
Jonathan Stevens employs 40 people at its factory on 36th Street and at eight retail stores across West Michigan. Each bed is hand-built to order.
"It's not a matter of how cheap can we build it, it's a matter of how good and what kind of quality we can put in it, so we give people the best value," Zagel said.
The company has been in business for 67 years; Zagel has run it for the past 40.
Jonathan Stevens mattresses are found in the region's finest hotels and casinos, including the luxury J.W. Marriott.
The average price for a queen bed is about $800 dollars, Zagel says. He says the payoff is in a better sleep, which leads to better health.
Zagel says studies show more people get into car accidents due to lack of sleep than from driving drunk.
