Three from Michigan die in wrong-way crash

GRAND ISLAND, NY (WGRZ - Buffalo) - Three people from Michigan are dead after they were hit head-on by a car traveling the wrong way on the I-190 Monday.

The crash happened near Whitehaven Road on Grand Island just before 1 a.m. Monday.

State Police investigators tell 2 On Your Side that a vehicle driven by Richard Hildebrand, 87, of Kenmore was traveling north in the southbound lane of the I-190 when he hit another vehicle head-on.

Three passengers in southbound vehicle were killed.

Hildrebrand, and the driver of the other vehicle, Burhanur B. Rahman, 22, of Hamtramck, Michigan were both taken to ECMC. Both are in critical condition.

The three people in Rahman's vehicle that died are identified as:
Shofiul Alom, 20, Nazim Khan, 21, and Rezwan Chowdhury, 21, all of Hamtramck, Michigan.

An eyewitness says that State Troopers put out a fire in one of the vehicles using a fire extinguisher. She also witnessed firefighters cut a victim out of the vehicle.

Troopers are still investigating the accident. The I-190 southbound has since been reopened.

Some are calling forelderly drivers to be retested in the State of New York. A local family started an on-line petition to push the movement.
