ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- An informational meeting on changes the Kent County Road Commission will make to Lamoreaux Drive NW turned confrontational as residents objected to the plan.

Currently, Lamoreaux is a four-lane road with two eastbound and two westbound lanes.  The road commission plans to remake the road, putting a turn lane in the center, one lane each for east- and westbound traffic, and smaller lanes on the outside next to the curbs.

On Tuesday, Alpine Township held an informational forum for residents to learn about the plan.  Instead, people began voicing their objections.

"It's a rotten idea," said one woman.  "You know something? There's going to be more road rage than ever."

"Ninety percent of the people surveyed are against this. Are you aware of that?" asked another woman.

"It's going to create more hassle," said a man.  "It won't be safer."

Currently, the road commission says 8,000 cars and trucks use Lamoreaux daily.  A representative from the commission told the audience their statistics show Lamoreaux will be safer after the changes are made.  Residents still were not persuaded.

"We have to have some watchdogs after these people who are running and taking care of our money," said Chris Nyenhuis.

But the decision has already been made by the road commission, and Alpine Township's supervisor, Alex Arends, trusts their information.

"I have trust in them because they're basing those decisions for only one reason -- and that is to benefit the people in Alpine Township," said Arends.  "If anyone could come to me and tell me there are ulterior motives, there isn't.  It's done for safety purposes."

The road commission plans to begin remaking Lamoreaux Drive by the end of August.
