ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) -- Grand Valley State University's Board of Trustees has approved increasing tuition by 3.7 percent for the 2012-13 academic year.

The tuition hike was unanimously approved by the board on Friday. Tuition will rise from $9,716 to $10,078.

The West Michigan school says the increase represents one of the smallest it's passed in the last two decades.

President Thomas Haas says Grand Valley remains among the state's most affordable public universities.

To help offset the increase, the school says it'll bump up the amount of financial aid it offers to qualifying students.
