SPARTA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sparta Fire Department Deputy Chief Dick Simons says that a hayfield fire in the 9200 block of Fruit Ridge Avenue Saturday began when farm equipment used to cut straw hit a stone, causing a spark that ignited the field.
The fire began around 11:45 a.m. and burned about five to six acres of hay, but no one was hurt. Firefighters believe that West Michigan's recent dry conditions helped fuel the fire.
Within minutes of fire crews leaving the scene, dirt was being laid over the burnt straw.
