GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A pregnant dog that was shot and left for dead in Beirut is getting a second chance here in the United States. Her story began three months ago.

"She was living on the street, about three years old, and there was a nice man that was feeding her every day. And one day he came down in the morning to feed her and her eyes were bloody, she was in pain. He thought she had been shot," says Janelle McFarlane, Founder of Hearts of Hope dog rescue in Grand Rapids.

McFarlane says the man in Lebanon gave "Ava" to a rescue group called Animals of Lebanon.

"She was heavily pregnant, about to have babies," she says. "She had them two days after she was shot."

The Lebanese rescue group called their American friend McFarlane. "I got a bunch of people to help me foster, and we have 25 foster homes now," she says.

So far, McFarlane has found homes for 135 dogs, 21 of them from Lebanon. The trips are paid for by the rescue group in Beirut.

"They have no animal welfare laws there, so people can torture and abuse as much as they want and nobody's going to do anything about it," says McFarlane.

Ava had several pellets removed from her head and will soon visit another veterinarian, for her eyes.

'We're taking her to a specialist, but we're not sure if it's going to make a difference with her vision or not," says McFarlane/

As for Ava's puppies, they're doing fine. There are four girls and two boys. All are up for adoption.  Janelle is also looking for a special home for Ava.

"She's doing better," she says.  "I'm going to be picky about  who adopts her because I want her to have the best home."
