KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) -  Local Vietnam veterans who died for their country now have the attention of the community.

They were honored at a ceremony Thursday afternoon in Kentwood.

The service followed the arrival of the Cost of Freedom Traveling Tribute at Kentwood Veterans Memorial Park.

The traveling wall is making its only stop in the state this week.

The ceremony was a chance for widows and family members of fallen soliders to pay due respect to their loved ones.

Vietnam veteran Kenneth Mayfield says he traveled to pay tribute.

"It's something for us to recognize, and something for the people to recognize. Over 59,000 guys died over there. That's a lot of husbands, a lot of cousins, a lot of brothers," said Mayfield.

Current service member Corporal Steve Durham PFC said, "I have great respect for all veterans, but Vietnam veterans especially because they didn't have that cushion to fall back on. We come back from the war. We get parades and all that stuff. They didn't get anything."

Durham saluted each Vietnam veteran whose family members stepped forward to lay flowers in front of the wall.

The traveling tribute is an 80 percent scaled version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

A computer is on sight to help you find your loved one's name.

The wall will be on display 24 hours a day at the park until 3 pm on Sunday.
