BYRON CENTER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sixteen years ago Ken and Shelly Loose moved into a home on Woodspoint Drive in Byron Center and have been raising their three kids.

"My husband and I met at Mary Free Bed. We both were there because we had spinal cord injuries," said Shelly Loose.

Being paralyzed made adapting to everyday life difficult. Loose says, "Even getting dressed is something you take for granted. For us, it's a process."

Making things even more difficult is their inaccessible home.
Shelly can't use the oven, washing dishes is difficult, plus the two can never use their front porch.

The couple's church heard they needed help and nominated them for a home makeover with Journey of Faith.

Matthew Starner with Journey of Faith says, "Generally we want to make it more accessible and easier for them to get around."

Matthew, with the makeover crew, says they still need at least fifty more volunteers to help with everything from a kitchen remodel, retiling, and landscaping.  Starner says, "There's a lot of overgrown bushes, things like that, we want to pull that out and put in lower maitenance items that are easier to take care of."

He says even 30 minutes of your time could make a huge difference. "This is an opportunity you don't usually get to make a difference and change someone's life forever."

After all, Shelly has made a difference of her own. She works to help others who have become paralyzed.

If you want to volunteer, the makeover is from August 2nd through August 4th at 990 Woodspointe Drive SW, Byron Center, MI. Contact Journey of Faith or just stop on over.
