Fireworks-related fires have dramatically spiked in Grand Rapids in 2012.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids deputy fire chief says  fireworks-related fires have skyrocketed in 2012, after the state legalized the sale of more powerful fireworks.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department released a report this week stating that it has responded to 28 fires caused by fireworks so far this year. In 2011, the department responded to only one such fire.

The estimated damage from 2012 fireworks fires is just above $105,000. Last year, there were no damage costs.

The Deputy Fire Chief says that if an appliance caused this much damage, it would be recalled and production stopped.
