(WZZM - WBND) - A Holland man died after crashing at a mud bog event in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday.

Steve Deleeuw's family said the 48-year-old was competing at the Summer Thunder Mud Bog event at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds.

Investigators say Deleeuw lost control and his vehicle and rolled over several times. He was trapped inside, and crews had to cut him out.

He died on the way to the hospital.

Deleeuw was a businessman in the community, and his family says he died doing what he loved.

As his brother Luke Deleeuw put it, "He had that need for speed and had a drive to never give up on anything."

Steve is one of 13 children, and helped run Deleeuw Lumber in West Olive.

Before the race, the announcer said this was the first time Deleeuw used his vehicle in the mud.

Steve's son was in Indiana to watch his father race.

The family is working to finalize funeral plans. The service will be Thursday at Hardawyke Christian Reformed Church.
