David Smith accused of knowingly spreading HIV to sex partners
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A man who failed to inform his sexual partner that he is HIV-positive is headed to prison. David Smith, 51, of Comstock Park will serve 17 months to four years behind bars.
In June, Smith pleaded guilty to the crime. Before his sentencing Wednesday, he apologized to the victim.
"All you ever did was offer me your love, and shared your hopes and dreams with me. I chose to take away your freedoms, gave you what this is, this mess of stuff, and nothing that i can do will make that right," said David Smith.
The Kent County Health Department previously urged people who had sex with Smith to contact the agency for an HIV test. The department said Smith suggested he was intentionally trying to spread the virus.
